Dr. Scott graduated from Rutgers University in 1844 and from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1848. After joining the faculty of Hope College in 1866 as a professor of chemistry and the natural sciences, Scott became an integral part of the school's administration. Centreville Reformed Church organized in 1839. The congregation was led by Rev. Asa Bennet during its first five years (1839-1844).
